On the auspicious occasion of Buddha Jayanti, a unique and inspiring initiative was organized by Nana Chahca, an organization dedicated to supporting small farmers and empowering marginalized women, in collaboration with Utpala Academy of Hospitality Management. The event featured a Barista Coffee Workshop for SEE students enrolled in the Bridge Course at Visionary Institute, Jorpati.
The workshop was not just an introduction to coffee culture and craftsmanship, but also a celebration of community, sustainability, and learning. With over 300 students participating, the event brought together experts from the hospitality sector, motivational speakers, social entrepreneurs, and international guests.
A special highlight of the day was the Free Coffee Tasting by Nepal Coffee Company, offering students and guests a sensory journey into the rich flavors of locally grown Nepali coffee. To honor the spirit of Buddha Jayanti, Utpala Café offered free Sujata’s Kheer, a traditional sweet rice pudding, to all guests and students throughout the day.
Expert Insights and Inspiring Messages
Gajendra Malla, Hotel Management Coordinator at Madan Ashrit Memorial Polytechnic Institute, Gothatar Affilated with CTEVT shared his vast experience in the global hospitality industry. A trained professional from Marriott Hotel, Malaysia, and a graduate in Hotel Management from Bangalore with a Master’s in Travel and Tourism from Delhi, he has trained baristas at Starbucks Bangalore and in various parts of Nepal. In his session, he emphasized the global demand for skilled baristas and the growing opportunities for Nepali youth in the hospitality sector.
Adding a motivational spark to the event, Subhrajit Dutta, a storyteller, educator, and motivational speaker from Kolkata, India, encouraged students to pursue their passions with resilience and integrity. His storytelling session touched hearts and inspired minds.
Deepak Bohara, Managing Director of Utpala Café, highlighted the significance of Buddha Jayanti as a day of reflection, compassion, and service. He spoke about the value of sharing knowledge and food, drawing from Buddhist principles, and stressed the role of vegetarianism in sustainable living.
International guest Tina, an Italian speaker, shared insights on the culture of hospitality and global diversity, reminding students of the importance of sustainable tourism in a rapidly globalizing world.
Nita G.C, the visionary founder of Nana Chacha, explained how coffee cultivation in Nepal can empower small farmers and create financially sustainable communities. She advocated for the promotion of local products and the significance of supporting small-scale agriculture in the face of global economic challenges.
Finally, Ashok Dahal, a prominent trainer and speaker, elaborated on the importance of skill development, cultural diversity, and adaptability in the modern era. He urged students to equip themselves with practical skills and global perspectives to thrive in the fast-changing world.
